Write what you know, it is said.
Well, I know what I'm curious about. So, I tend to start from there. Getting to explore fascinating questions is one of the core aspects of what I value so much in being a writer. About a year ago I wrote a blog entry about something else I'm passionate about, theology. I recently brought together my love for Sci-fi and theology.
If there's one thing that's for sure, it's that the world is an ever-changing place. We are constantly confronted with new questions that challenge our assumptions about the world, introduce us to new ethical conundrums, and in general make us take a good long look at your worldview (well, those of us willing to actually live purposeful lives and not content to just go through the motions).
So I got to thinking about how the discovery of an intelligent species might affect my religious views as well as the faith of millions of people. Like I said, I wrote a short blog post about such a possibility in the past. But I didn't want to just leave that idea there. So I wrote a short story.
I've only just recently finished this story, which I've titled, "Our is a One Way Journey." I'm currently submitting it to science fiction magazines, which can be a slow process with no guarantee of publication. But I do feel that this is the best short story I've written to date. And a friend who has read a good bit of my writing (and, more importantly, not always liked it) definitely feels its among my best work. I was also honored to have an author who has published with my favorite Sci-fi magazine take a look at this story. His feedback was instrumental in my revision process.
